Safety Rules

Runners must observe the following Rules.

  • RUNNERS WILL BE REQUIRED TO CARRY THE FOLLOWING EQUIPMENT AT ALL TIMES UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED.

  • DETAILED MAPS AND DETAILED DIRECTIONS AS ISSUED BY ORGANISERS AND AVAILABLE ON THE RACE WEBSITE.  It is permissible to carry only the relevant Directions and Maps for each Section.

  • WATERPROOF MAP CASE.

  • MOBILE PHONE (phone number must be provided on Entry Form)

  • COMPASS.

  • WHISTLE.

  • RAIN JACKET.

  • WATER CONTAINER (1 litre minimum, more recommended).

  • TORCH/HEADLAMP INCLUDING SPARE BATTERIES which must be carried from Checkpoint 2 and used at all times between 8:00pm and 5:30am.

  • BACKUP TORCH/HEADLAMP INCLUDING SPARE BATTERIES which must be carried from Checkpoint 2 until at least 5:30am.

  • REFLECTIVE VEST DESIGNED FOR NIGHT USE which must be carried from Checkpoint 2 and be worn at all times between 8:00pm and 5:30am.  (See here for an example.  Similar Vests are also available at running and bike shops and work wear stores).

  • Render all possible assistance to any person found injured or incapacitated.

  • Travel on the right-hand side, facing oncoming traffic, whenever travelling along roads with the exception of the first 6.6 kilometres to the Wakefield Trackhead when Runners must travel on the extreme left of the road and there are lead and following safety vehicles.  If at all possible travel off to the side of the road surface.

  • GIVE WAY TO VEHICLES WHEN CROSSING OR TRAVELLING ALONG ANY PART OF THE COURSE.  RUNNERS ARE REQUIRED TO LEAVE THE ROAD OR TRAIL SURFACE, STOPPING IF NECESSARY, WHENEVER ENCOUNTERING VEHICLES, FROM EITHER DIRECTION, DURING THE GNW100S.  Runners need to be particularly careful during the hours of darkness and also be wary of trail-bikes and 4WD vehicles that will be encountered on forest roads and tracks at any time.

  • Wear Reflective Vests and carry a light visible to oncoming traffic between 8:00pm and 5:30am.  These items must be carried from Checkpoint 2 onwards until the first Checkpoint reached after daylight on Sunday.

Recommended Additional Equipment

It is recommended that Runners consider carrying the following additional equipment

Water

Although the Course of the GNW100s crosses many creeks en route the water should be considered unsafe for drinking.  Runners must carry sufficient water to last them between Checkpoints which can be up to 30 km or 6 hours travelling apart.  GIVEN THAT HIGH TEMPERATURES ARE A DEFINITE POSSIBILITY IN NOVEMBER, IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT RUNNERS CARRY AND CONSUME ADEQUATE FLUIDS.

Race Communications

Hunter Wireless Institute Communications Emergency Network (WICEN) provides communications support at all Checkpoints.  Although some Checkpoints will not be within mobile phone range, phone coverage can be accessed at higher elevations within a short driving distance of these Checkpoints.  All race officials will carry mobile phones and have phone lists that include the numbers of organizers, other checkpoints, Support Crews and emergency numbers (police, doctor, hospital, ambulance, poisons information, tow trucks, NRMA, etc.).

Sweepers

For safety, it is intended to have Sweepers following the last Runners in the Race.  However, this will be dependent on the availability of suitably qualified volunteers.

Weather

The table below shows average November weather conditions for several locations near the Course.  Runners must be prepared for the possibility of hot weather although there is still the possibility of very cool nights and wet weather.  On Race weekend, the sun rises at 5:46am and sets at 7:32pm. A quarter moon will rise at 11:50am and set at 12:48am..
